http://yzzj.fodian.net/Blog/ReadArticle.aspx?ID=A000000217

The Sutra Of Casket Seal Dharani From The Secrete Whole Bodies’ Relics Of All Buddhas' hearts

Thus I have heard, at one time, The Buddha was at the Precious Bright Pond in the No-dirt Garden in the country of Moqietuo, surrounded by an assembly of uncountable high Bodhisattvas, high Sound Hearers, Heavenly Dragons, Yaochas, Jiandapos, Asuluoes, Jialouluoes, Jinaluoes, Mohouluoqies, Human beings and Non-human beings.

At that time, a high Bhraman in this assembly whose name was No-dirt and Subtle Light. He was a wise man of profound knowledge. All people were delightful to meet him. He took refuge with Triple Gems and always did ten good deeds. He was very mercy and wise. He always wished all living beings to be completely good and rich.

This Bhraman No-dirt and Subtle light stood from his seat. He walked to The Buddha and surrounded Him for seven times. He offered The Buddha with many flowers and incense. He put very expensive clothes and jewellery on The Buddha. He made obeisance to The Buddha’s feet , stood by one side and said: “ We invite The World Honoured One and all of you to accept my offering in my home tomorrow morning. Then The Buddha promised.

The Bhraman knew The Buddha accepted his invitation. He returned home quickly and prepared one hundred delicious food and drinks at night. He cleaned all his halls and rooms. He hanged many banners. He brought his relatives with incense, flowers and good music in the next morning. They came to The Buddha and said: “It is the right time, please come to my home”. The Buddha answered the Bhraman No-dirt Subtle Light kindly and announced to the mass: “All of you should go to the Bhraman’s home and receive the offering to let them receiving big benefit. Then The Buddha stood up from his seat. Various colour light from The Buddha shown to ten directions as soon as The Buddha stood. All the people saw and started to walk.

Then the Bhraman brought with him incense and flowers respectively with his relatives and Heavenly Dragons, Eight Departments, the four Bhraman Kings walking in front to open and guide the way for The Buddha.

At that time The Buddha walked to a small distance and arrived at a garden named" RICH"

There was an old Stupa which was damaged with brambles and grass. It was buried with tiles and rocks. It looked like a mound of mud. The Buddha walked to this Stupa. The Stupa shone very brightly. A sound from this mound of mud praising:

“Good indeed, Good indeed, Shakyamuni. Your walk today is in a very good situation. And Bhranman, you will receive great benefit today.” Then The Buddha paid respect to the Stupa and walked surrounding clockwise to the Stupa. The Buddha took off his gown and put it on the mound of mud. He wept seriously. After weeping He smiled again. At that time all Buddhas from ten directions saw and wept. They emitted bright lights to shine this Stupa. All the people was frighten and confused. At that time The Varjrapania Bodhisattva wept seriously. He walked to The Buddha in a dignified manner with his pestle turning and said to The Buddha:”

Why is it so bright? Why do you weep? And The Buddhas from ten directions are appearing with such a brightness. We wish The Thus Come One to explain my question to the mass.

Then The Bhagavad told Varjrapania.“ All Buddhas' uncountable kotis heart dharani secrete seal Dharma is in this great whole body relics concentration Buddhas’ Stupa. This Stupa became overlapping with no gap, as many as sesames. Hundreds and thousands of kotis Buddhas

Bodies are also as many as sesames. Hundreds and thousands of kotis Buddhas' whole bodies relics concentration, even the eighty four thousand Dharmas are inside this Stupa.

Ninety nine hundreds of thousands of millions kotis Buddhas' heads' form are also inside. Because of this wonderful reason, no matter where this Stupa is, it is very spiritual efficacious. The wonderful virtue may satisfy all Earthly good wishes."

When the mass heard The Buddha said like that. They left all the dirty thoughts, and all the worries were gone. They obtained clean Dharma eyes. They obtained one of the result according to their different conditions. Their benefit were also different. Some body obtained Sakadagamin, Sotapannas, Anagamin, Arhat, Pratyeka Buddhas and Boddhisattva, Avarvartyas, Sabuoruo wisdom. Some people were certified to obtain the primary stage, the second stage until the tenth stage of Boddhisattva position. Some of them obtained satisfied six paramita. The Bhraman left dirty thoughts and obtained five spiritual penetrations.

When Varjrapania Bodhisattva saw this strange matter, he said to The Buddha: “ Good indeed, so strange. We obtain such wonderful merit and virtual since we hear about it. If we hear the truth and wholeheartedly believe it, how much merit and virtual we can obtain?”

The Buddha said: “ Listen Varjrapania. If there are faithful men or faithful ladies and the four groups of disciples of mine in the future bring forth to write this Sutra, it is equal to write all Sutras spoken by ninety nine hundred thousand kotis Buddhas. They have planted good roots in front of ninety nine hundred thousand kotis Buddhas. All the Buddhas take care of them just like protecting their eyes, also like the mercy mothers taking care of their sons. If anybody read this one Sutra, it is equal to reading all Sutras spoken by all Buddhas from the past, present and the future. Because of this reason, ninety nine hundred thousand kotis Buddhas, Proper Enlightened Ones as many as sesames come range upon range without any gap. They show up day and night to bless this people. So all Buddhas as many as uncountable sand grits in the Ganges will arrive even when the previous Buddhas range hasn’t left. They come by turns like the sands revolving in the whirling water. They come to and fro without stop. If anybody offers this Sutra with incense, flowers, beautiful clothes and wonderful decorations. They become Heavenly flowers, beautiful clothes and wonderful decorations made from seven gems appearing in front of ninety nine hundred thousand kotis Buddhas from the ten directions of the Universe. These things piled up like The Sumero Mountain for offerings. The good roots they plant are also so many.”

At that time, the Heavenly Dragons, the Eight Departments, Humans and Non-humans heard about this. They felt very strange and talked to each other:” So strange is this spoiled mound. It has such spiritual change because of the Buddhas’ blessing.” Varjrapani asked The Buddha again:

“The World Honored One, why is the seven gems Stupa becomes a mud mound now?”

The Buddha told Varjrapania: “ This is not a mound. It is a wonderful great Stupa. It does not appear because the mass’s bad kharma. The Stupa was hidden but the whole bodies of Buddhas are not destructive. How can the varjra bodies of Buddhas be destroyed!

When I enter nirvana, in the age of decadence and compelling. If anybody who do illegal deeds, They should be punished to the Hell. They do not believe the Triple Gems. They do not plant any good roots. Buddhism will be hidden because of this reason. But this strong and durable Stupa would not be destroyed because of blessing from all Buddhas’ spiritual power. The living beings without wisdom are covered by kharma. They spoil the gems and do not know to use it. Today I weep because of this reason. All Buddhas weep also.

Moreover, The Buddha told Varjrapania: “If anybody writes this Sutra and put it into a Stupa. It will be a Stupa of all Buddhas’ Varjra Store. It is also a Stupa of all Buddhas’ Dharani Heart Secrete Blessing. It is a Stupa of ninety nine hundred thousand kotis Buddhas. It is also a Stupa of all Buddhas’ tops and eyes. It will be protected by all Buddhas’ spiritual power. If anybody put this Sutra into a Stupa or a Buddha statue, This Statue will be made by seven gems. It will be very efficacious and will fulfill all wishes. The umbrellas, covers, nets, wheels, plates, bells, bases and steps will be made by power. The material from mud, wood, stone or brick will become seven gems because of the power of this sutra.

All Buddhas will add their powerful force and continuousely bless this Sutra by honest speech.

If any sentient being prostrates himself before and offers an incense and a flower to this Stupa. Serious sin of eight billion kalpas of this sentient being will be deleted. His disaster will be avoided when he is alive. He will reborn in a Buddhist family after he dies. If anybody should be punished to Abi Hell, when he prostrates himself before this Stupa one time or walks around this Stupa one time clockwise. The door of the Hell would be closed and the road of Bhodi will be opened.

All Buddhas will bless by spiritual power to any place where the Stupa or the image locates. No tornado, thunderstorm, lightning will do harm. No poisonous snake, poisonous worm and poisonous beast may hurt. No lion, mad elephant, tiger, wolf, wild bees may hurt. No panic from Yaocha, Luocha, Buduo, Nakunshe, Zheli demons, monsters, epilepsy. No sick from cold or hot, lilou, tanzhu, sore and scabies.

Anybody will avoid all disasters if he just has a look at this Stupa.

No plague will hapen from human, horses, animals, boys and girls. He will not suffer from unnatural death. He will not be wounded by knife, water and fire. He will not be invaded by robbers, thieves or enemies. He will not suffer from hunger and poor. No incantation from ghosts and monsters may do harm.

The Four Heavenly Kings and their relatives will protect him day and night. Great Yaocha Generals from the Twenty Eight Departments, and the sun, moon, five stars banners cloud and comets will protect him day and night. All the Dragon Kings will reinforce their air to create rain on time. All the Heavenly beings, Trayastrimsha Heaven will come down three times for offering.

All Celestial beings come three times for praising, surrounding and salute to this place. Sakya King and all Heavenly girls come down to do offering three times day and night. This place is blessed by all Buddhas. This Stupa is like that because the Sutra is inside.

If anybody establishes a Stupa with mud, stone, wood, gold, silver, cupper and lead, and he writes this spiritual Dharani and put it inside. The Stupa become seven gems as soon as the Dharani is put. The steps, plates, umbrellas, covers, bells and wheels become all seven gems. The Buddha forms around the four sides of this Stupa stay and protect day and night because of the Dharma.

The seven gems Stupa with whole bodies relics wonderful precious store grows by the power of this Dharani to Ajianiza Heaven. All Heavenly beings pay respects to, protect, pay offering to this Stupa day and night when it rises to the Heaven.

Varjrapani asked: “Why is this dharma so wonderfully virtuous?” The Buddha said:” Because of the spiritual power of this Casket Seal Dharani.”

Varjrapani said:” We wish The Buddha take pity on us and speak this Dharani.”

The Buddha said:” Listen and think, do not forget. The bright appearance of branch bodies of all Buddhas of the present and the future. The whole body relics of all Buddhas in the past are in this Casket Seal Dharani. All the Buddhas’ three bodies are also inside.” Then The Buddha spoke the Dharani:

Namad sedeliya divi kanam,

When The Buddha finished speaking this Dharani, All Buddhas spoke from the mound to praise:”Good indeed, good indeed, Shakyamuni, you come to this turbid world and speak this profound Dharma for the benefit of those living beings who have nobody to rely on. This important Dharma will stay for the benefit, serene and happiness of the world for a long time.”

At that time, The Buddha told Varjrapani: “ Listen, listen, this important Dharma has immeasurable spiritual power and uncountable benefit. It is like the precious gratified pearls on the banner. It spread gems to fulfil all wishes.

I just tell you one ten thousandth of this dharma. You should remember for the benefit for all.

If any bad person felt into the Hell. He suffered seriously and did not know when he could be relieved. If his son or grandson calls the dead person’s name and read this Dharani for seven times. The melting copper and hot iron becomes suddenly a pond with eight virtual water.

A lotus flower carries him with a precious cover upon his head. The door of Hell will be broken and the road of Bodhi opens. The lotus flower flies to the World of Ultimate Bliss. All the wisdom appears naturally. He is happy to speak and stay at a position of supplement of a Buddha.

If any person suffers many diseases and is suffering acute pain because of his cause of serious sin. If he reads this spiritual Dharani for twenty one times. All the diseases and worries will disappear. He will enjoy uncountable blessings and long life.

If any body lives in a poor family because he was miserly, his clothes can not cover his body. His food can not keep him survival. He appears to be very week and thin, people don’t like to see him. This person feels ashamed. He goes to a mountain taking some wild flowers. He grinds some wood to make incense. He goes to the front of this Stupa to prostrate and make offerings. He walks around the Stupa seven times clockwise. He weeps and repents. The poor effect is deleted and wealth comes suddenly. Seven gems come like raining. Nothing is in shortage. But at this time he should offer to The Buddha and The Dharma; and donate to the poor. If he is miserly, the wealth will disappear suddenly.

If anybody establishes a Stupa with a height of four fingers for planting good roots. He uses mud or bricks according to his ability. He writes this spiritual Dharani and puts it into this Stupa. He prostrates himself before this Stupa with fragrant flowers. Frangrant cloud comes out from the small Stupa because of the power of the Dharani and his faith. The fragrance and cloudy light spread all over the Dharma Realm. This fragrance and brightness will do Buddhist deeds. The merit and virtual are as the same as abovementioned. That is to say no any wishes are not satisfying.

In the age of decadence, if noble men and noble women of the four families of believers, strive to build this Stupas and settle the miraculous Dharani in it, the resulting virtue and merits will be immeasurable.

If some one who comes to the Stupa begging for blessing, he offers a flower or an incense, prostrates himself before and makes offerings to the Stupa, and circumanbulates the Stupa clockwise. Because of such merits, the person will automatically gain happiness, high position and fame without striving; obtain longevity and richness without asking; defeat enemies and thieves without fighting; diminish hatreds and curses without expelling; avoid diseases and plagues without curing: get a noble husband or a lovely wife without searching: bear smart sons and pretty daughters without praying; and all wishes will be fulfilled.

If there are birds, pigeons, dogs, wolves, mosquitoes and ants, coming to the shadow of this Stupa or stepping on the grassland, they will destroy the obstruct and understand from ignorance. They will enter a Buddhist’s home and receive the Dharma wealth.

If any person sees the form of the Stupa, or he hears the sound from the bells, or hears the name of this Stupa, or he is at the shadow of this Stupa. His criminal obstruction will be demolished. His wishes will be fulfilled. He will enjoy a serene life and will reborn in the World of Ultimate Bliss after he dies. If anybody uses a little mud to repair the spoiled wall of the Stupa, or uses a small stone to

Prop up the leaning Stupa. His blessing and lifespan will be raised. He will become a Wheel Turning King after this life.

After my nirvana, if anybody in the four families of my believers offers incense and flowers, sincerely vows to read this Dharani in front of the Stupa aiming to relieve the suffering of those in evil patterns, every sentence will eliminate great light to shine the three evil patterns. All

Suffering will be gone. The living beings will be relieved from pain and the seed of Buddha will sprout. They will reborn in any pure lands as they wish

If anybody standing on a mount and read this Dharani sincerely. All living beings with hair, feather, scales and shells that are staying in the mountains, forest, rivers and seas within the sight of this man, will break the obstruction and understand from the ignorance. The original three natures of the Buddha will appear. They will stay in the serene place of great nirvana. If anybody walks with this person on the same road. Or anybody touches his clothes or steping on the footprint of this person. Or anybody meets him and has a talk with this person. The serious sin of this person will be demolished and he will fulfill a success.

At that time, The Buddha told

Varjrapania: " Now I enjoin this secret mysterious Dhrani Sutra to you. You should pay respect and protect it. Let this Dhrani Sutra be spread all over the world. Don't let the living beings stop learning it.

Varjrapania said: " Now I am so lucky to be enjoined by The Hounable One. We wish to protect and spread this Sutra day and night to the world for paying a debt of gratitude to The Buddha.

If anybody writes ,up holds and remind continuously this Sutra. We will urge the Shakra Emperor and the four Kings of the Heaven, all Dragons and the Eight Departments on the Heaven to protect this person day and night and do not leave him.

The Buddha said: " Good indeed, Varjrapania. You protect this Dharma and do not let it stop for the great benefit of all living beings in the future.

At that time, The Hounable One spoke The Casket Seal Dharani and spread the Buddhis deeds. After that they went to the Bhraman's home and accepted offerings. They made great benefits to all Heavenly beings and Human beings and returned to their residence.

At that time, all the Bhishus, Bhishunis, laymen, laywomen, Heavenly Dragons, Yechas, Jiandapoes,Axiuluoes, Jialouluoes,

Jinaluoes, Mohouluoqies, Human beings and Non-human beings were all happy. They believed, accepted, up held and practised this Dharma.

Usnisa Vijaya Dharani Sutra

(The full title:)
The Sutra of The Supreme Sacrosanct Dharani From The Buddha's Summit

(Tripitaka No. 967)

Translated during the Tang Dynasty by Buddhapala

Thus I have heard, at one time, the Bhagavan (World Honored One) was dwelling in the city of Shravasti at the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of Orphans and the Solitary (Anathapindika), together with his regular disciples of twelve hundred and fifty great Bhikshus and twelve thousand Maha Bodhisattvas Sangha in all.

At that time the devas in Trayastrimsha Heaven were also having a gathering in the Good Dharma Hall. Among them was a devaputra by the name of Susthita who, together with the other great devaputras, was frolicking in the garden and courtyard, enjoying in the supremely wonderful bliss of heavenly life. Surrounded by devis they were extremely happy - singing, dancing and entertaining themselves.

Soon after nightfall, Devaputra Susthita suddenly heard a voice in space saying, "Devaputra Susthita, you have only seven days left to live. After death, you will be reborn in Jambudvipa (Earth) as an animal for seven successive lives. Then you will fall into the hells to undergo more sufferings. Only after fulfilling your karmic retribution will you be reborn in the human realm, but to a humble and destitute family, while in the mother's womb you will be without eyes and born blind."

On hearing this, Devaputra Susthita was so terrified that his hair stood on end. Tormented and distressed, he rushed over to the palace of Lord Sakra. Bursting into tears and not knowing what else to do, he prostrated himself at the feet of Lord Sakra, telling Lord Sakra of what had happened.

"As I was enjoying the frolic of dance and songs with the heavenly devis, I suddenly heard a voice in space telling me that I had only seven days left, and that I would fall into Jambudvipa after death, remaining there in the animal realm for seven successive lives. Following that, I would fall into the various hells to endure greater sufferings. Only after my karmic retribution had been fulfilled would I reborn as a human, and even then I would be born without eyes in a poor and disreputable family. Lord of Heaven, how can I escape from such sufferings?"

Lord Sakra immediately calmed his mind to enter Samadhi and made careful observations. Instantly, he saw that Susthita would undergo seven successive evil paths in the forms of a pig, dog, jackal, monkey, python, crow and vulture, all feeding on filth and putrescence.

Having seen the seven future rebirth forms of Devaputra Susthita, Lord Sakra was shattered and was filled with great sorrow, but could not think of any way to help Susthita. He felt that only the Tathagata, Arhate, Samyak-sambuddha could save Susthita from falling into the great sufferings of evil destines.

Thus, soon after nightfall that very day, Lord Sakra prepared various types of flower wreaths, perfume and incense. Adorning himself with fine Deva garments and bearing these offerings, Lord Sakra made his way to the garden of Anathapindika, abode of the World Honored One. Upon arrival, Lord Sakra first prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet in reverence, then circumambulated the Buddha seven times clockwise in worship, before laying out his great Puja (offerings).

Kneeling in front of the Buddha, Lord Sakra described the future destiny of Devaputra Susthita who would soon fall into the evil paths with seven successive rebirths in the animal realm with details of his subsequent retribution.

Instantly, the usnisa (crown of the head) of the Tathagata radiated multiple rays of light, illuminating the world in all ten directions, the light then returned, circling the Buddha three times before entering His mouth. Then the Buddha smiled and said to Lord Sakra, "Lord of Heaven, there is a Dharani known as the 'Usnisa Vijaya Dharani'. It can purify all evil paths, completely eliminating all sufferings of birth and death. It can also liberate all miseries and sufferings of beings in the realms of hell, King Yama and animal, destroy all the hells, and transfer sentient beings onto the virtuous path."

"Lord of Heaven, if one hears this Usnisa Vijaya Dharani once, all the bad karma incurred from his previous lives that should cause him to fall into hells will be destroyed altogether. He will instead acquire a fine and pure body. Wherever he is reborn, he will clearly remember the Dharani - from one Buddhahood to another, from one heavenly realm to another heavenly realm. Indeed, throughout the Trayastrimsha Heaven, wherever he is reborn, he will not forget."

"Lord of Heaven, if someone at death's door recalls this divine Dharani, even for just a moment, his lifespan will be extended and he will acquire purification of body, speech and mind. Without suffering any physical pain and in accordance with his meritorious deeds, he will enjoy tranquility everywhere. Receiving blessings from all the Tathagatas, and constantly guarded by devas and protected by Bodhisattvas, he will be honored and respected by people, and all the evil hindrances will be eradicated."

"Lord of Heaven, if anyone can sincerely read or recite this Dharani even for a short period of time, all his karmic retribution which would lead him to suffer in the hells, the animal realm, the realm of King Yama and the hungry ghost realm, will be completely destroyed and eradicated without leaving any trace. He will be free to go to any of the Buddhas' Pure lands and heavenly palace; all gateways leading to the Bodhisattvas' abode are open to him unobstructed."

After hearing the above discourse, Lord Sakra immediately appealed to the Buddha, "For the sake of all sentient beings, may the World Honored One kindly give a discourse on how one's lifespan can be lengthened."

The Buddha was aware of Lord Sakra's intention and his eagerness to hear His discourse on this Dharani and so immediatelyproclaimed the Mantra thus:

"NAMO BHAGAVATE TRAILOKYA PRATIVISISTAYA BUDDHAYA BHAGAVATE.

ADHISTHANADHISTHITA MAHA-MUDRE SVAHA."
(This Usnisa Vijaya Dharani is the improved version with some additions to the original Sanskrit transliteration)

Then the Buddha told Lord Sakra, "The above Mantra is known as the 'Purifying All Evil Paths' Usnisa Vijaya Dharani'. It can eliminate all evil karmic hindrances and eradicate the suffering of all evil paths."

"Lord of Heaven, this great Dharani is proclaimed together by Buddhas as numerous as eighty-eight kotis (hundred million) of the grains of sand of the Ganges River. All Buddhas rejoice and uphold this Dharani that is verified by the wisdom seal of the Maha Vairocana Tathagata. This is because in the evil paths, to liberate them from painful retribution in hell, animal and King Yama's realms; to deliver beings facing immediate danger of falling into the sea of birth and death (samsara); to assist helpless beings with short life spans and poor fortune and to deliver beings who like to commit all kinds of evil deeds. Moreover, because of its dwelling and being upheld in the Jambudvipa world, the power manifested by this Dharani would cause all beings in hells and other evil realms; those with poor fortune and revolving in the cycles of birth and death; those not believing in the existence of good and evil deeds and are deviated from the proper path, to attain deliverance."

Again Buddha reminded Lord Sakra, "I now entrust this divine Dharani to you. you should in turn transmit it to Devaputra Susthita. In addition, you yourself should receive and uphold it, recite, contemplate and treasure it, memories and revere it. This Dharani Mudra should be widely proclaimed to all beings in the Jambu-dvipa world. I also entrust this to you, for the benefit of all heavenly beings, that this Dharani Mudra should be proclaimed.

Lord of Heaven, you should diligently uphold and protect it, never letting it to be forgotten or lost."

"Lord of Heaven, if someone hears this Dharani even for just a moment, he will not undergo karmic retribution from the evil karma and severe hindrances accumulated from thousands of kalpas ago, that would otherwise cause him to revolve in the cycles of birth and death - in all kinds of life forms in the evil paths - hell, hungry ghost, animal, realm of King Yama, Asuras, Yaksa, Raksasa, ghosts and spirits, Putana, Kataputana, Apasmara, mosquitoes, gnats, tortoises, dogs, pythons, birds, ferocious animals, crawling creatures and even ants and other life forms. Owing to the merits accrued from hearing for a moment this Dharani, once this very life is over, he will be reborn in the Buddha lands, together with all the Buddhas and Ekajati-pratibaddha Bodhisattvas, or in a distinguished Brahmin or Ksatriya family, or in some other wealthy and reputable family. Lord of Heaven, this man can be reborn in one of the above-mentioned prosperous and reputable families simply because he has heard this Dharani, and hence be reborn in a pure place."

"Lord of Heaven, even acquiring the most victorious Bodhimanda is a result of praising the meritorious virtues of this Dharani. Hence, this Dharani is also known as the Auspicious Dharani, which can purify all evil paths. This Usnisa Vijaya Dharani is like a Treasury of Sun Mani Pearl -pure and flawless, clear as space, its brilliance illuminating and all-pervading. If any beings uphold this Dharani, likewise will they be bright and pure. This Dharani is similar to the Jambunada gold - bright, pure, and soft, can not be tainted by filth and well-liked by all who see it. Lord of Heaven, beings who uphold this Dharani are just as pure. By virtue of this pure practice, they will be reborn in the good paths."

"Lord of Heaven, where this Dharani dwells, if it is written for distribution, propagated, received and upheld, read and recited, heard and revered, this will cause all evil paths to be purified; miseries and sufferings in all hells will be completely eradicated."

Buddha again told Lord Sakra cautiously, "If someone could write this Dharani and place It on the top of a tall banner, high mountain or in a tall building or even keep It in a stupa; Lord of Heaven! If there are Bhikshus or Bhiksunis, Upasakas or Upasikas, laymen or laywomen who have seen this Dharani atop the above structures; or if the shadows of these structures should fall on beings who come near to the structures, or particles of dust from the written Dharani are blown onto their bodies;

Lord of Heaven: Should the accumulated evil karma of these beings cause them to fall into the evil paths such as realms of hell, animal, King Yama, hungry ghost, Asura and other, they will all be spared from the evil paths, and they will not be tainted with filth and defilement. Lord of Heaven!

Instead, all Buddhas will bestow predictions (Vyakarana) onto these beings who will never regress from the path to Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (complete enlightenment)."

"Lord of Heaven, let alone if one makes various offerings of flower wreaths, perfumes, incense, banners and flags, canopies decorated with gems, clothing, necklaces of precious stones, etc, to adorn and honor this Dharani; and at major routes, if one builds special stupas to house this Dharani, then most respectfully with palms together circumambulates the pagoda, bowing and taking refuge, Lord of Heaven, those who make such offerings are called the great Mahasattvas, Buddha's true disciples, and the pillars of Dharma. Such stupas will be regarded as the Tathagata's complete body sharira-stupa."

At that time, in the early part of the night, the ruler of the Hell Realm - King Yama. came to the abode of the Buddha. First, using various Deva garments, beautiful flowers, perfumes and other adornments, he made offerings to the Buddha, then circumambulated the Buddha seven times before prostrating himself at the feet of the Buddha in reverence, saying, "I heard that the Tathagata was giving a discourse in praise of upholding the powerful Dharani; I have come with the intention to learn and cultivate it. I shall constantly guard and protect those who uphold, read and recite this powerful Dharani, not allowing them to fall into hell because they have followed the teachings of the Tathagata."

At this time, the four Guardians of the world - the Caturmaharajas (Four Heavenly Kings) circumambulated the Buddha three times, and most respectfully said, " World Honored One, may the Tathagata kindly explain in detail the way to uphold this Dharani."

The Buddha then told the Four Heavenly Kings, "Please listen attentively, for your benefit as well as for the benefit of all beings with short life spans, I will now explain the method to uphold this Dharani.

On a full-moon day - the 15th day of the lunar month, one should first bathe oneself and put on new clothes, uphold the profound precepts and recite this Dharani a 1000 times. This will cause one to lengthen one's lifespan, and be permanently free from the sufferings of illness; all one's karmic hindrances will be completely eradicated. One will also be liberated from suffering in hell. If birds, animals and other sentient beings hear this Dharani once, they will never again be reborn in these impure and gross body forms once their lives have ended."

The Buddha continued, "If someone from a serious disease hears this Dharani, he will be free from the disease. All other illnesses will also be eradicated, so too will the evil karma that will cause him to fall into the evil paths. He will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss after the end of his life. From then onwards he will no longer be born from the womb. Instead, wherever he is reborn, he will be born transformed from the lotus flower and would always remember and uphold this Dharani and gain knowledge of his past lives."

The Buddha added, "If someone has committed all the severe evil deeds before his death, according to his sinful deeds, he ought to fall into one of these realms of hell, animals, King Yama or hungry ghosts, or even into the big Avichi Hells, or be reborn as an aquatic creature, or in one of the many forms of birds and animals. If someone could obtain part of the skeleton of the deceased, and holding a fistful of soil, chant this Dharani 21 times before scattering the soil over the bones, then the deceased will be reborn in heaven."

The Buddha further added, "If one can chant this Dharani 21 times daily, one is worthy of accepting all the immense worldly offerings and will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss after one's death. If one chants this Dharani constantly, one will attain Maha Parinirvana and be able to lengthen one's lifespan besides enjoying the most extraordinary bliss. After one's life is over, one will reborn in any of the wonderful Buddha lands, in constant company of the Buddhas. All Tathagatas will always give discourses on the profound and wonderful truth of Dharma and all World

Honored Ones will bestow predictions of enlightenment upon one. The light illuminating from one's body will pervade all Buddha lands."

The Buddha further explained, "To recite this Dharani, one should first, in front of the Buddha's image, use some clean soil to construct a square Mandala, the size according to one's wish. On top of the Mandala one should spread different kinds of grass, flowers and burn different kinds of quality incense. Then kneeling down with the right knee on the floor, mindfully reciting the Buddha's name and with the hands in the Mudrani symbol, (i.e. each hand bending the forefinger before and pressing it down with the thumb and placing both palms together before the chest) in reverence, one should recite this Dharani 108 times. The showers of flowers would rain down from the clouds and would thus be universally made as offerings to Buddhas as numerous as the grains of sand of eighty-eight million Ganges Rivers. These Buddhas will simultaneously praise,

"Excellent! Rare indeed! A Buddha's true disciple! " One will instantly attain Unobstructed Wisdom Samadhi and the Great Bodhi Mind Adorned Samadhi. Thus is the way to uphold this Dharani."

The Buddha again exhorted Lord Sakra, saying, "Lord of Heaven, the Tathagata uses this expedient means to deliver beings who would otherwise have fallen into hells; to purify all evil paths and to lengthen the life-spans of those who uphold this Dharani. Lord of Heaven, please go back and transmit this Dharani to Devaputra Susthita. After seven days, come to see me with Devaputra Susthita."

Thus, at the abode of the World Honored One, the Lord of Heaven respectfully received this Dharani practice and returned to his heavenly palace to convey it to Devaputra Susthita."

Having received this Dharani, Devaputra Susthita kept to the practice as instructed for six days and six nights, after which all his wishes were completely fulfilled. The karma which should have led him to suffer in all the evil paths were all eradicated. He would remain on the

Bodhi Path and increase his lifespan for an immeasurable period of time.

Thus, he was extremely delighted, exclaiming aloud in praise, "Extraordinary Tathagata! What a rare and wonderful Dharma! Its efficacy explicitly verified! Rare indeed! Truly I have thus obtained deliverance!"

When the seven days were over, Lord Sakra brought Devaputra Susthita, together with other heavenly beings, respectfully bearing excellent and wonderful adornment of flower-wreaths, perfumes, incense, jeweled banners, canopies decorated with gemstones, Deva-garments and garlands of precious stones, approached Buddha's abode and presented their grand offerings. Using heavenly garments and various garlands of precious stones to make offerings to the World Honored One, they then respectfully circumambulated the Buddha a hundred thousand times, paid homage to the

Buddha, then happily took their seats and listened to the Buddha preach the Dharma.

The World Honored One then extended his golden arm and touched the crown of Devaputra Susthita, to whom He not only preached the Dharma but bestowed a prediction of Devaputra Susthita's attainment to Bodhi.

Finally, the Buddha said, "This Sutra shall be known as the 'Purifying All Evil Paths' Usnisa Vijaya Dharani'. You should diligently uphold it." On hearing this Dharma, the entire assembly was extremely happy. They faithfully accepted and respectfully practiced it.

(一)梵语as!t!a^v aks!an!a^h!,巴利语at!t!hakkhan!a^。

1、卵生:由卵孵出的有情,如鸡、蛇、鱼、蚁等;
2、胎生:从母胎而出生者,如人、象、马、牛、驴等;
3、湿生:由粪聚、腐肉、丛草等润湿地之湿气所产生者,如霉菌、蚊蚰等;

欲界:五趣杂居地;

色界:离生喜乐地、定生喜乐地、离喜妙乐地、舍念清净地;
